Nancy Sopiel with her parents Mary Francis Neptune and Selmore Sopiel, circa 1904. Mr. Sopiel is holding a traditional “war club” carved from a birch tree root—one of many hand-crafted items available to visitors who came to the camp with curiosity in their heads and money in their pockets or purses. These clubs were highly symbolic, with root ends sharpened to a point or carved with animal and human forms. Beyond weaponry, they were used in ceremonies and dances. When Nancy Sopiel grew up, she married Penobscot Jessie Ranco. Her own daughter Gertrude married David Soctomah, father to Passamaquoddy tribal historian Donald Soctomah.
